Arthroscopy - the word is derived from Greek and means to look in the joint. This technique has been known for 30 years and is still improving. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure on a joint. The advantage over traditional open surgery is that the joint does not have to be opened up fully. For knee arthroscopy only two small incisions are made, one for the arthroscope and one for the surgical instruments. The entire procedure is magnified on screen. Arthroscopy surgery allows for 100% confirmation of the diagnosis, to confirm or deny the results of X-ray, ultrasound or resonance and at the same time this surgery allows us to use the right therapy for further specifically targeted and planned stages of treatment. The benefits for the patient are enormous. Arthroscopy does not last as long as open surgery, causes less pain, heals faster and has much less risk of complications. It can often be done without the annoying outpatient hospital. Arthroscopy is performed under general anaesthesia. In individual cases, spinal anaesthesia is possible such that the patient can view the surgery on screen.
